What to buy with No7 skincare and makeup vouchers!

What To Buy With No7 Makeup Skincare Vouchers - Aspiring Londoner

It's that time again - when Boots spouts these vouchers left, right and centre at you, and you just can't escape the lure!

I'm guilty of hoarding stuff when these vouchers come around, especially when it coincides with Boots' 3 for 2 offer - I mean seriously how can one refuse?

Review | Aveda Botanical Kinetics Hydrating Lotion

Aveda Botanical Kinetics Hydrating Lotion
I never used to bother to read ingredients list on the packaging of moisturisers.  The promises of the brand were enough to bowl me over to buy their lotions and potions.  However in the last couple of years, I’ve really been conscious of what I buy with my hard-earned cash and if it will actually be beneficial to the skin issues I want to address.

The Empties # 2

It has been forever since my last empties post.  I do save my empty product packaging but forget to take pictures and then they end up in recycling... I've been good and saved them this time *pats self on the back*

Firstly, Jason Biotin Restorative Conditioner,  I had the shampoo too but it ended up in the recycling bin before I could take a photo.  I wanted to try out sulphate free shampoo and conditioner to see if it made any difference to my hair.

Illamasqua Lipstick in Sangers Swatch

Illamasqua describes Sangers as 'blood red', which I agree with.  It's a true red lipstick and really enhances your look.  It's really easy to apply from the bullet and I paired it with No 7 Lipliner in Fire (which I'll post about soon!).  It is really pigmented and really opaque.  So one swipe is enough!

Boots Haul

So somebody went to Boots and lost track of her spending! Oh yeah, that's me... *hangs head in shame*.  This is just the norm now, isn't it?  Think husband has just given up, and doesn't bother saying anything when he sees Boots bags all over the house!

So now that's off my chest, let's get on with this haul!

Boots Haul - Beauty by Eff

First of all, Boots cotton pads in larger size - nothing exciting.  I find the larger sizes better to remove eye makeup with.  Available at Boots for £2.19.

Rave Review | Maybelline Rocket Volum Express Mascara

Maybelline Rocket Volum Express Mascara in Black

Maybelline Rocket Volum Express Mascara Wand

Anybody who knows me, knows how much I love mascaras.  I can go out without a scrap of makeup, but not without mascara.  I feel that it really makes me look awake, and brightens my face up.

SEVENTEEN 17 Doll'd Up Mascara

Seventeen Doll'd Up Mascara

Seventeen Doll'd Up Mascara wand

Don't you just hate it when you get home from shopping and realise you've bought the wrong colour mascara?!  I was annoyed when I realised instead of my usual black mascara I had picked up the brown/black instead of the blackest black.  This is my first brown mascara, so definitely an experimental product for me.

Natural lashes - no  makeup
Seventeen Doll'd Up Mascara in Brown/Black on lashes
I actually quite liked this, and I think had it been black, it'd have been even better.  As you can see from the images, the mascara really did lengthen my lashes.  Although it doesn't really provide a lot of volume.  I wear this for work or for places where I don't want to look too 'done up'.  It's quite subtle which is a change for me as I'm usually after mascaras that give va-va-voom volume!

Available at Boots for £6.29.

Everyday Makeup: The Quick Version

During the week, I opt for little makeup and natural finish.  I don't want to look like I have caked it on!  So my daily makeup face consists of foundation, concealer, blusher, powder, mascara, eyeshadow (thanks to Maybelline Color Tattoo), and something light on the lips.  Blimey, that still sounds like a heck of a lot!

In the morning, after my morning skincare routine (separate post to follow), first and foremost I reach for my La Roche-Posay SPF.  I could go out without a touch of makeup but not without this.  Sun damage scares the bejesus out of me!

Then I move onto my foundation.  I use different ones depending on how my skin feels, and what the weather is like.  Would you believe I currently have four on rotation?  Terrible, I know.  This summer I got Illamasqua's skin base foundation.  I apply this using my beloved Real Techniques Buffing Brush.  I really like this foundation as it gives a lovely, dewy finish without looking greasy (even on my combination skin).

For concealer, an oldie but goodie - Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer in Deep.  I dab this under my eyes and on blemish marks, I just use my ring finger to blend.

Moving onto blusher, this again depends on what the weather is like.  So on a cooler day I opt for pink toned blushers, and on warmer/brighter days, I opt for more golden/orange/coral blushers.  As the weather is cooling down now, Clinique's powder blush in Pink Love has been adorning my cheeks.  I apply this using Real Techniques Blush Brush, the fluffiest there is!

I use the same brush to apply my powder as well, because the brush is really light and fluffy.  The powder I've been using is the MAC Studio Careblend/Pressed Powder in Medium Plus.  This sets the makeup and keeps my skin looking quite matte.  Although I do have to retouch around lunchtime.

For eyes, quick dab of Maybelline Colour Tattoo in On and On Bronze.  I won't go on anymore, as I have dedicated a post to this!  I apply this with my fingers, and then apply a couple of coats of Maybelline The Rocket Mascara (full review to follow) on my lashes.

And for lips, quick and easy - Clinique's Chubby Stick in Voluptuous Violet.  Just such a lovely plum colour, perfect for autumn!  I fell in love with it when I saw it on someone's lips in a shop, and I bought it the same day!  It gives a sheer wash of colour, and is so moisturising.  I don't even use a lip balm with this.  Note: this colour is more moisturising than other colours of the original chubby sticks, strange but true.

So there you have it.  My quick everyday face I wear to work, or running errands.

What products do you use to shorten your makeup application time?

Swatch | Illamasqua Lipstick in Liable

Illamasqua Lipstick in Liable

Illamasqua Lipstick in Liable Swatch

Another day, another lipstick.  Until about 2 years ago, I had never worn lipstick.  Now I can't seem to get enough, as evident by the swatches on this blog!

Liable is a orangey red lipstick with a matte finish.  I really, really like the colour but it's really drying.  It sticks on to every bit of dry skin on my lips so it is vital to ensure you've thoroughly exfoliated and moisturised your lips beforehand.  I apply my Nuxe Reve de Miel lip balm underneath as it's matte, so the lipstick retains the matte look without being too drying.

Longevity of this lipstick is excellent, as it was still there when I got home from work.  I'd say about 7-8 hours.  Sure, it fades a little, but doesn't completely disappear.  It's easy enough to wipe of with micellar water so doesn't leave a stain on your lips after you've removed your makeup.

I really do like this lipstick, but the texture lets the product down.  Shame it doesn't have the same texture as Eurydice.

Available at Illamasqua for £16.50.

Haul | Boots, Debenhams & Feel Unique!

It's haul time!  I am rather excited with the products I've purchased, I've been eyeing up these beauties for some time now.

Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey Mask, Dior Addict Lipstick in 771 Passionee, MAC Lipstick in Russian Red & Flat Out Fabulous

Dior Addict Lipstick in 771 Passionee, MAC Lipstick in Russian Red & Flat Out Fabulous

First up, Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey Mask   I read about it in various different blogs and the ingredients intrigued me.  My skin has recently gone berserk and I have broken out like never before.  I will be putting this to the test and report back right her on BBF.

As you can tell, I've had a bit of a lipstick obsession.  The recent swatchin' might have given it away.  On one of my many swatchin' trips to Boots, I tried the Dior Addict Lipstick in Passionee.  It was love at first sight.  It's a really girly, romantic pink and just perks me up!

MAC's retro matte collection has been long awaited in the BBF household.  And when the release coincided with the Debenhams 10% off Beauty Event - I was sold!  Flat Out Fabulous is from the retro matte collection.  It's quite a bright fuschia pink.

Last but not least, MAC Russian Red is somewhat of a cult favourite.  I couldn't justify not having this in my collection any longer.  This is quite a vintage, classic sort of red.  Very Gatsby if you ask me.

Swatches of the above will follow shortly, so keep checking back!

Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey Mask, available at Feel Unique for £21.50.

Dior Addict Lipsticks, available at Boots for £24.

MAC Lipsticks, available at Debenhams for £15.

Reminiscing About Summer with MAC Vegas Volt Lipstick

My summer 2013 lipstick of choice has been undoubtedly MAC's Vegas Volt.  I wasn't sure about wearing a bright neon orange, so opted for Vegas Volt.  It's an orange, coral colour with a creamy finish.  Like most MAC lipsticks, it has an opaque finish.

I really loved how bright yet wearable the shade is.  It will suit most skin tone, in my opinion.  I found the longevity to be around 4-5 hours, I don't expect lipsticks to have longer staying power to be honest.  Especially moisturising ones.  Vegas Volt is easily one of my favourite lipsticks now.

Available here for £15.

Rave Review | Bourjois Effect Smoky Pencil in Intense Black

I'm very loyal to liquid eye liners.  But when I''m in a hurry, I have always reached for my Rimmel Soft Kohl Kajal Eye Pencil (in Jet Black).  I've been using this for as long as I can remember.

A couple of months ago, I won the Bourjois Effect Smoky Pencil in Intense Black in a Twitter Giveaway.  So, I strayed.  Boy, am I glad!  This is the most black eye pencil I have ever used.  Like seriously.  Intense black indeed.

Bourjois Effect Smoky Eye Pencil in Intense Black - Beauty by Eff
Bourjois Effect Smoky Eye Pencil in Intense Black

The pencil itself is two-sided.  One side has the pencil itself, and on the other side there's a small brush to smudge the liner if you want to create a smoky eye.  It's also really soft compared to the Rimmel pencil and glides on to my lash line effortlessly.

The formula is long lasting.  Although it does smudge on to the top part of my lid, I put it down to my super oily eye lids (like an oil sick, no joke.).  I just love how even after I get home after work, the liner is still there, intensely black.  The Rimmel on the other hand is long gone by the end of the day.  I absolutely love the Bourjois pencil!  Tiny little issue, because it's so soft, the tip breaks off when trying to sharpen.  But that's just me being pedantic.  I still love it!

Bourjois Effect Smoky Eye Pencil in Intense Black swatch - Beauty by Eff

Will I repurchase?  I'm thinking yes!  Although I still love my old, faithful Rimmel pencil, unfortunately it has been knocked off the top spot by this beaut.

Available here for £5.49.

Swatch | Kiko Nail Lacquer in Grass Green 391

One of my favourite nail polish.  The colour is a true green grass sort of colour (hence the name).  I have two coats on my nails and it's opaque.  The formula is lovely and I picked it up in their sale for £2.50.

The top coat is possibly the best top coat I've ever used.  It makes my nails super glossy.  Only little issue I have is that it's quite thick and sometimes leaves bubbles on my nails. I got it in June, and it has gotten quite gloopy.  Still it does its job really well.

Essie Protein Base Coat unfortunately isn't amazing.  It peels off (taking the polish with it) after a day or two.  Bit of a disappointment, but it prevents the polish from staining my nails.

Skincare | Soap and Glory Wish Upon A Jar Wonder Face Cream

I have been following Miss Budget Beauty's blog and YouTube channel for nearly a year now.  And within that time, I've seen numerous videos and posts where she has raved and raved about this face cream.  Being the skincare obsessive that I am, I had to know if it was really that great.
Soap & Glory Wish Upon A Jar Wonder Face Cream, 50ml

I should mention, this isn't a straightforward face cream.  You need to use it twice a day (am, pm) for 21 days and then use another moisturiser.  So I suppose you could class it an anti-aging treatment almost.

Soap & Glory Wish Upon A Jar Wonder Face Cream, 50ml
I have given it a fair go.  My first issue with this cream was the texture and consistency. It is really thick and felt greasy on my skin.  I found that it didn't really sink into skin, instead just sat on top making my skin feel like it couldn't breathe.  This was NOT a good base for makeup either, my makeup was literally sliding off my face after a couple of hours.

The scent is reminiscent of chocolate orange, but I found that to be quite overwhelming.

Lastly, did it deliver?  I'm sorry to report, I didn't see any difference on the fine lines on my forehead.  I just didn't see any results, which was really disappointing.

Overall, this product was a bit of a let down from S&G.  Shame really, as I adore their bath and body range.

This is available at Boots for £16.

Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24hr Cream Gel Eyeshadow in On and On Bronze Rave!

Although I do have my fair share of eyeshadow stash, I am somewhat lazy when it comes to applying it on a daily basis.  Cue Maybelline Color Tattoo in On and On Bronze.  I don't think it'd be an overstatement if I said, this has changed my life.  It really wouldn't!

Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24hr Cream Gel Eyeshadow in On and On Bronze - Beauty by Eff
Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24hr Cream Gel Eyeshadow in On and On Bronze

I have had it just over a week now and I have wore it every single day! I know.  It's just so easy to apply and the staying power is just wow!  Initially I used my Smashbox Lid Primer before applying the shadow so I put the longevity down to the primer.  Then I decided to test it's staying power and applied it on its own.   It stayed on for over 8 hours and that's more than good enough for me.  I mean who really needs an eyeshadow to stay on for 24 hours? A little bit gross if you ask me!  I digress.

Maybelline EyeStudio Color Tattoo 24hr Cream Gel Eyeshadow in On and On Bronze Swatch

The colour payoff is brilliant, however isn't as 'bronzey' as it appears in the pot.  I think that makes it more suitable for everyday wear.

Another winner from Maybelline.  They are releasing pigment versions of these little beauties across the pond, can't wait to try them out when they make their way over here!

Available at Boots for £4.99, it's currently on 3 for 2 offer.

Swatch | Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids Lipstick in Electric Orange 912

This is my first high street lipstick *shock*.  I am glad to report it hasn't disappointed.  I was a little scared about how it'd look on me, but I'm pretty satisfied with the colour payoff.  What has surprised me most is how hydrating it is.  It kept my lips soft, but did cling to dry skin on the lips.

Maybelline Color Sensational in Electric Orange 912

Maybelline says this lipstick contains honey nectar to nourish your lips, it sure does!  I applied at 7 am, and didn't need to reapply until after lunch (about 1 pm) - I'm happy with that sort of staying power!

Swatch | Illamasqua Lipstick in Scandal

Illamasqua describes Scandal as a warm coral pink.  This has a lovely creamy finish and stays in for a good few hours.  On the bullet, it looks quite scary bright, but when applied looks really nice.  I hadn't tried Illamasqua lipsticks before, but I'm a firm fan!

It's a great lipstick, in terms of colour and pigmentation.  However be mindful, that it does tend to cling to dry skin on the lips.  So make sure lips are exfoliated and moisturised!

Illamasqua describes Eurydice as a bright fuchsia pink with a matt finish.  I wasn't sure if this would be too bright for me, but it's not. I LOVE this shade.

What I love most about this is that it manages to keep my lips moisturised even though it's a matt formula, unlike some other matt lipstick I've used.  As it's a swatch, I won't bore you with too many words!

Hair Saviour | Ojon Damage Reverse Restorative Hair Treatment

This is the shiz for me when it comes to hair mask/treatment.  I mean, this is one of my desert island product.  This tub of stuff is something to write home about.

There is a lot of hype around the beauty world about using hair oils.  Ojon's Damage Reverse Restorative Hair Treatment is not marketed as an oil, but it sort of is.  I'll explain.

Ojon Damage Reverse Restorative Hair treatment - Beauty by Eff
Ojon Damage Reverse Restorative Hair Treatment, 100 ml.

Ojon Damage Reverse Restorative Hair Treatment, 100 ml.

In the tub, the mask has a solid, almost butter like texture.  I usually scoop it out with a spoon and rub it in between my palms.  Then the texture changes into an oil, which I apply from the mid-length of my hair to the ends.  I apply before I go to sleep and then wash it off in the morning.  As you can see from the picture, it is well used.  I have had this for over 18 months, so a little goes a long way.  So I find the price justifiable.

However be warned, the fragrance isn't great.  It took me quite a while to get used to it, but when I realised the benefits, I quickly learnt to ignore the smell.  I religiously use this once a week to maintain the health of my hair.  I had really long hair, and this helped so much to ensure my ends weren't dry.  I just cannot articulate how good this product is.

I've already re-purchased but a slightly different version.  I'll report back once I've used it.  In simple words, my hair cannot survive without this.  Strong words, but so true.

Available at Boots for £34.

Hydration in a tube | Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask

Hydration is an important part of your skin health.  As well as drinking a lot of water to keep hydrated from the inside, you need to hydrate the outer layer of your skin as well.  This means make-up sits a lot better on your skin, and the fine lines are kept at bay.
Initially, I thought this mask was for very dry skin.  So being a combination/oily skinned gal, I stayed away.  However a couple of months ago, I noticed dry flaky patches on my face although rest of my face was still rather oily.  So I decided to give this a shot.

Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask, 100ml
Firstly, the fragrance – oh my!  Never have I wanted to eat up any of my skincare to this extent! It smells incredibly fruity - think peaches.  It’s very creamy and thick, however once applied doesn’t feel like it’s clogging my skin.  It doesn't sit on top of my skin either, instead sinks in making my skin feel plump instantly.  I take a small pea sized blob (yes, that is ALL you need) and a little goes a looong way.  That amount seems to be enough for my skin.  Although it instructs you to wipe it off, I go to sleep with it.

Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask applied on skin
When I wake up, my skin feels much, much softer.  It might just be me, but it feels like my foundation goes on a lot smoother, and blends in with my skin much better.  I have been loving this. I use it twice a week – mostly because I love smelling so fruity!

Available here for £22.

Review | Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Balm

This was picked up in my recent Paris trip (haul post), as every blogger has raved and raved about this.  Although this can be bought in the UK at escentual.com, it is much cheaper in Paris.

Nuxe Reve De Miel Lip Balm

I’m not one to buy into ‘cult’ products, but Wow!  This may be the king of lip balms.  It looks matte in the pot and is not shiny when applied.  It has a subtle honey fragrance, not at all overpowering.  The thing that really won me over is the staying power.  It stays on my lips for hours! And I mean hours!

Nuxe Reve De Miel Lip Balm

Mostly I use it overnight, but I’ve used it in the mornings and have gone off to work and it has kept my lips moisturised until the late afternoon (2-3pm) when I've had late lunches!  I honestly cannot fault it.  Whilst it won’t replace my Blistex lip conditioner, it is a definite favourite.  The reason Blistex won’t be replaced is more to do with the price than the function.
This has really  made me keen to try out more Nuxe products.

Have you tried this or any other Nuxe products?

Review | Bourjois Little Round Pot Blusher in Rose D'Or

Bourjois little round pot blusher has been around for a long time.  Shockingly I hadn't tried it before, but have always adored the packaging.  It's just so dainty! I love the little mirror inside but not the brush though.

Bourjois Little Round Pot Blusher in Rose D'Or

I have been using this for around 2-3 months now and I love the flush of colour it provides.  The powder blush is very finely milled so doesn't feel very powdery.  I have used it with Real Techniques blush brush and buffing brush.  I find that the buffing brush picks up the blusher better as it's more dense.

Bourjois Little Round Pot Blusher - Rose D'Or swatch

It's lovely for the summer as it's not too bright but gives just a lovely flush of pink to the cheeks.  It has a slight golden shimmer running through it, so you don't need to wear any highlighter.  It's quite pigmented as can be seen in the swatch.  I can't believe I haven't tried this before!  It's great for travelling, because of it's size.  Look at it! So pretty!!

Available in more shades Boots for £7.49.

Tried & Tested | REN Invisible Pores Detox Mask

This was in my LookFantastic haul a few weeks back.  I have used it for roughly four weeks now.  It's a creamy clay formula and has a subtle fragrance.  I applied a thin layer with my fingers on cleansed skin.  I don't like applying it really thick because then masks take forever to dry!  I waited around for 40 minutes, it did dry before that.  Then I with a wet flannel, I wiped the mask off.

Initial thoughts - my skin looked a little brighter.

Closer inspection - pores around my nose appeared cleaner.  Although I don't have full-on blackhead problems, I still get clogged pores around my nose.  It seemed to address this issue.

As clay masks go, this is a good one.  REN is a trusted skincare brand in my book, and I trust the ingredients in it.  I haven't had adverse reactions and definitely the last few weeks, my skin has been calm (which is unnatural for my skin!).  So credit where credit is due! Bravo REN!

Mega Haul | Paris & London

After stressful exams followed by a relaxing break in London & Paris - a haul was definitely going to happen!  I've spent an obscene amount of money, and now will be surviving on air for the rest of the year :-|

Because I knew I was going to Paris, I've been saving up to stock up on skincare. And stock up I did!  Most of the products were recommendations from Lisa Eldridge and Caroline Hirons - big enablers.

Paris

London and Paris Haul - Beauty by Eff (UK Beauty Blog)
Paris and London haul

  • Bioderma Crealine H2O Micellar Solution
No introduction required, if you haven't heard of this - where have you been?!  Make-up remover, does its job superbly.  I have heard it's not very good at removing waterproof mascara, but I don't use waterproof  mascara, so I love this.  You can find it in the UK now, but hell of a lot cheaper in Paris!
  • Bioderma Hand Cream
This was an impulse buy near the counter, needed a hand cream so picked it up.  50ml for 1.50 euro, yes please!
  • L'Occitane Hand Cream (not pictured)
Another impulse buy, really liked the fragrance.  I'm a sucker for L'Occitane hand creams.
  • Nuxe Reve De Miel Lip Balm
I think every blogger and their dog has raved about this.  I needed to know what the fuss was all about.  Again this can be bought in the UK, but at double the price.
  • Embryolisse Hydra Mask
This is not the 'cult' product from Embryolisse, but I wanted something that my skin needed. Once I've tried it a few times, I will review in full.
  • Phyto Botanical Leave-in Conditioner
A favourite of Lisa Eldridge's and dear God she can sell me anything!
  • La Roche-Posay Serozinc
This is Mrs. Hirons' doing, and can't be bought in the UK.  This is part of her 2-step toning process.  Really keen to try it and see how it effects the hydration level of my skin.
  • Cattier Green Clay Mask
Again, Mrs. Hirons is to blame. This is amazingly cheap, 2.99 euro!! I would've bought more if I could carry! I got the green clay version for oily skin, there are 2 other variations for dry & sensitive skin.  Full review will follow.
  • Caudalie Shower Gel
Loved the fragrance, good deal.  What else can be said about shower gel?! Haha!

London

  • Origins Facial Treats Set (includes full size Drink-up Overnight Mask & travel size Microdermabrasion exfoliator)
This set is £28 and there was an extra 10% off so had to snap it up.  I've been meaning to purchase this mask for a while.  Full review will follow, **spolier alert** I've used it once and it's fab!

  • PIXI Glow Tonic
I needed to stock up on this bad boy, seeing as I can only get my hands on it at London.  I like this as a toner because it doesn't feel harsh on my skin i.e. there is no strong astringent-like smell (I'm looking at you Clinique!).  Although it must be noted, not a fan of the smell of this one either,  but definitely better than normal toners.  I have seen difference on the surface of my skin, it feels smoother to touch and my pores do not get clogged as much.  So definite winner for me.
  • Kiko Gel Top Coat
I haven;t tried anything from Kiko yet, but I remember Miss Budget Beauty mentioning how much she liked this, and it was on half price! I will be trying this soon, and let you know my thoughts.
  • Kiko Nail Lacquer in 391
This was also in the sale, can't go wrong with £2.50!! I have been looking for a bright green nail polish and this ticked the box.
  • Forever21 Necklaces
I do love F21 jewellery, their price is unbeatable.  Not much to say about these really, bargain price and I love them!
