Before last year, I had never used lip liners. It always felt like an unnecessary step to me. I really didn’t see the point. During one of Boots No7 voucher promotions, I decided to give lip liners a go and purchased No7 Precision Lips Pencil, £6.75 in Fire and Blush. Fire is a true red colour and Blush is a rose pink. I wear a lot of red lipsticks so it made sense to go for a red and the pink was quite muted so just more of a nude shade for me.
I used Fire with scepticism as I wasn’t sold on the idea but I was pleasantly surprised at the result. It made my red lip stay on longer and made my lipstick/lips look much neater. I loved how easy it was to use because of the wind-up mechanism rather than sharpening it manually. Also the tip of the lip liner is fine enough to draw a really precise line.
What I loved most about using lip liner was how easy it made the lipstick application process. I don’t have to take as long to be precise around the edge of my lips. I don’t really like using lip brushes, so always apply lipstick straight from the bullet. Now, I can just draw around my lips and fill in with a lipstick, done! Another benefit of using lip liners is that if you have lipsticks that tend to bleed/feather, lip liners help minimise or in some cases stop it completely! So if you’re afraid your bold red lips are going to spread all over, give this a try!
Another trick I’ve recently tried was to use lip liners as a base and then put a lipstick on top to mix up the colour. This can help you to create a complete new shade of lip product or make a unsuitable lipstick shade wearable (see results here).
So back to lip liner question in hand – to wear or not to wear? My answer is if you are wearing a bold, statement lip and you want to make it last then yes! Otherwise day to day, you can go without. I’d just rather have those extra few minutes in bed, thanks!
