Five Festive Red Lip Options

Five Festive Red Lipsticks ft Nars, YSL, Illamasqua, MAC & GOSH - Aspiring Londoner

‘Tis the season for festive red lips.  Well, I love a red lip any month of the year, but December is definitely the month to wear it.  I have five of my favourites for you that’ll set you up for this party season.

I generally like my bold lips to be matte.  Less smudging, longer lasting – just the way I like it.  You won’t be at all surprised to hear the first one; it is NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella.  I got it around this time last year and have been in love with it ever since.  It is the perfect deep red that lasts basically forever and I always get asked what I’m wearing on my lips.  It’s a must have for everyone!

Another favourite of mine is MAC’s Russian Red.  It’s a matte finish and lasts a long long time.  The pigmentation is amazing (usual MAC standard) and is the perfect 1940’s type glamour red.  I’d call this a true red.  It has blue tones so makes it appear vibrant and makes your teeth look brighter (score!).  The formula is slightly creamier than the NARS pencil.  I love this paired with black winged liner and super voluminous lashes!

The YSL Pur Couture Lipstick in Le Rouge is an exception to the rule.  It’s not matte, so it really moisturises your lips and makes your lips look fuller, and I adore the shade.  It has blue tones too (although it looks orange on the picture!  The camera hasn’t picked up the true colour.)  It looks amazing with glowing, flawless base and just false lashes.  I think it’s perfect for a cocktail party or similar event.

I’m surprised I don’t see this mentioned more of other blogs.  Illamasqua Lipstick in Sangers is what I’d describe as a true red lipstick.  It has a matte finish yet comfortable to wear.  I think it’ll suit all skin tones as there are no strong orange or blue tones coming through.  If you’re unsure, go with this; it will not fail you.

I don’t find many drugstore/highstreet lipsticks that I absolutely love.  But this year GOSH Velvet Lipsticks have converted me.  The shade Scarlet is a beautiful almost glossy version of Sangers.  As the finish isn’t matte, the colour payoff is slightly inferios and the longevity isn’t as good as Sangers.  However at a third of the price, I wouldn't be that bothered.  If you’re on a budget or don’t want to spend too much money as you won’t wear it much, this is a great option!
